Steve Harris for Area 4 Director October, 2011

Why Steve Harris Should Be Our Next Director

The SCCA is a diverse group of individuals united in our love and appreciation of cars. Our social activities are centered on this common bond.

But as we evolve as a club, it is apparent that we need to apply sound business principles to manage the club’s resources and grow our membership. The products of SCCA must keep pace with changes to our society so that our members are best served.

Steve Harris has been a successful businessman, owning a robotics and automation company for over 28 years. He understands finance, marketing, sales, client relations, engineering and human resources. He also understands that to reach a goal, you must have a detailed and well thought out plan.

Steve has also been passionate about the SCCA and has contributed many ways to our club’s success. But as our Area 4 Director, Steve can help us even more. Here are some of the main planks in Steve’s Platform:

  • Work with the SCCA Track Acquisition Committee, other SCCA sources and private investors to purchase and operate Blue Grass Motorsports Park (BMP). The SCCA owned models include Thunderhill Raceway, High Plains Raceway, and Roebling Road Raceway.
  • Complete the BMP plan and operate the site for Regional and Divisional Solo, PDX, Rally Cross and Regional/National Road Racing.
  • Make our Solo and PDX Programs our gateway to soliciting new members through advertising and marketing tie-ins.
  • Enhance our National Marketing and Communications Department to include Sponsor and Client Relations. Expand and retain existing marketing relationships. Get National marketing money to our Regions.
  • Use our Sponsor relationships to subsidize Regional Trailers for use at Solo and other Regional promotional activities.
  • Develop alternate speed events competitive with the marque clubs and vintage clubs – not all our events need to be National or Regional races.
  • Reduce the number of National Classes to 24, then 20.
  • Reconstitute the CRB; let racers within each class decide their own specification rules.
  • Enforce a “Rules Year” where GCR rules are not changed mid-year.(We talk about this then violated again in 2011)
  • Change the Runoffs format to reduce the time commitment for all involved. (Steve was there working on the Court of Appeals for 9 days)
  • Communicate with Area 4 Members. Our current Director tells us almost nothing about what is going on at the National level. Past Directors Pete Hylton and Larry Dent would tell us every month. Steve has promised a monthly Press Release at minimum.

If you want a better club, elect better leaders.

Elect Steve Harris for Great Lakes Division, Area 4 Director.

Steve’s SCCA credentials:

  • Former RE and Asst. RE of Western Ohio Region
  • Solo Participant
  • Sports 2000 and Formula Continental Racer (National License)
  • SCCA Pro Racing Team Owner/Crew
  • Club Racing Chief Steward, Operating Steward, Steward of the Meeting, and Safety Steward
  • Executive Steward of Central Division
  • Executive Steward of Great Lakes Division
  • Author of the Steward SIT Training Manual
  • Author of the Steward Safety Track Inspection Manual
  • Chairman of the GCR Re-write Committee
  • Chairman of the CGR Advisory Committee
  • Member, National Court of Appeals
